USA Needs 25,000 More Electric Vehicle Charging Technicians Over The Next 6 Years

This gap must be closed to achieve President Biden's plan to install 500,000 fast chargers by 2030.

According to the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), 35,000 EV charging technicians are needed by 2030 to meet the demand for EV installations and maintenance.

Today, there are only 10,000 Technicians.

The shortage is due to several factors;
- Rapid growth of the EV market
- Complexity of EV charging systems
- Lack of EV charging training programs

The Biden administration has taken steps to address the shortage;
- Working with industry partners to develop standardized training curricula
- Partnering with community colleges and technical schools
- Investing in training programs for EV charging technicians
- Providing funding for apprenticeships

Companies are working to recruit, train, and retain EV charging technicians;
- Tesla launched a training program at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada
- General Motors partnered with several community colleges and technical schools to develop training programs
- Siemens launched an online training program for EV charging technicians
- EVgo offers a $5,000 signing bonus to new EV charging technicians
- ChargePoint offers a referral bonus to its employees who refer qualified EV charging technicians
- Electrify America offers a variety of training and development opportunities to its EV charging technicians

Currently, only 10% of EV Charging Technicians are Women, and only 5% are Minorities.

By actively recruiting women and minorities, companies can tap into a wider talent pool and bring fresh perspectives and skills to the EV charging industry.

While significant investments are being made to expand the U.S.'s EV charging infrastructure, it's critical to direct more attention and resources towards developing the sector's future workforce.
