If you are waiting to commission an EV charging installation at your site you may be stuck in a holding pattern due to electrical equipment shortages. One of the most critical elements causing project backlogs is the line-voltage meter socket. There is good news, additional equipment is being approved for use to enable project delivery.
Utilities will not permit you to energize if the current to your site cannot be metered and your account billed. Energy is metered by either a line voltage meter; meaning, the electrical energy is connected to and flows through the meter enclosure directly, or via remotely-mounted current transformers (CTs). CTs are typically contained in a separate electrical enclosure or mounted in the utility transformer.
Line-voltage meters are the ideal choice for smaller EV Charging projects. They can support up to 320-amps at 480 volts. This yields enough power for up to 40 low-current Level 2 ports or just over 200kW of DC Charging Capacity. Integration of line-voltage metering is one of the streamlining elements built into the Energy Pedestal.

Line-voltage meter sockets have been backlogged for up to a year resulting in lengthy commissioning delays.
Inability to commission a project can have costly collateral impacts. This may include delay of payout on rebates and grants, delay of final certificates of occupancy where a facility is under charge port mandates, shortened effective warranty periods, and poor driver/tenant experiences. There is also repetitional damage to account for. Many hosts are eager to accommodate drivers at their facilities that may have been demanding charge ports while not able to distinguish the cause for the delayed power-up.
Utility metering departments are meticulous in their validation of components out of concern that customers are billed with the utmost precision. Approved equipment lists are therefore kept tight and administered without exception.
