Mexico Leads the Latin American Ranking of Electric Vehicle Sales

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, SLP. September 16, 2023.- As the years go by, interest in electric vehicles has increased considerably, as many countries have focused on promoting and strengthening sustainability and energy efficiency. In 2022 alone, 6 thousand units were sold in Mexico, although this figure is expected to increase even more in the future.

According to Statista , the percentage registered last year is equivalent to 33 percent more than what was reported in 2021 and in this way it became the marketing leader in Latin America, followed by Brazil with 5,100 units and Colombia with 2,400.

For the international statistical portal, the country will reach 18,900 electric vehicles in 2026, which would cause sales to triple in three years, this is because the demand for electric cars in Mexico is the highest in the region if compare with other nations. Meanwhile, Brazil is expected to reach 16 thousand vehicles and Colombia 7 thousand.

It should be noted that new brands have arrived in the nation to produce their vehicles, such as BMW, which on February 3 confirmed that it will assemble electric vehicles at its plant in San Luis Potosí. The company is joined by General Motors, which will begin manufacturing the Chevrolet Blazer EV in Ramos Arizpe, although it will only be for export at first and from the last quarter of 2023 there will be availability for the domestic market.

Likewise, Tesla announced in March 2023 that it will install an assembly plant in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, where it will manufacture a new generation electric vehicle. In turn, Jetour intends to invest 3,000 million dollars to build an assembly plant for combustion and electric vehicles that would be in Bajío. Meanwhile, JAC Mexico plans to increase production 25% this year and Ford that of its Mustang Mach-E.

Last year, Mexico exported electric vehicles to the US market for 2,636 million dollars, becoming the fourth country with the most turnover to the North American country for this type of sale. The first three places were held by Japan (US$ 6,381 million), South Korea (US$ 5,874 million) and Germany (US$ 5,070 million).
