As of 2030, it is expected that half of the cars will be hybrid and electric; by 2040 the sale is 100% and by 2050 the cars are exclusively electric.
From 2030 it is expected that half of the cars will be hybrid and electric!
While President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suggests that the next government build another fuel refinery, his administration has already set a deadline for the withdrawal of the sale of cars that use gasoline from the Mexican market.
In the goals established in the draft of the new National Electric Mobility Strategy (ENME) , the federal Executive establishes that by 2030, 50 percent of light and heavy vehicles sold in Mexico will be hybrid and electric; by 2040, 100 percent, and by 2050 electric cars are sold exclusively.
The draft under review by the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Conamer) justifies that the goals are aligned with the commitments acquired by Mexico upon its adherence to the Glasgow Pact3 for electromobility.
"The international goals committed to the decarbonization of the transport sector require considerable efforts to be met and imply the massive introduction of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, both light and heavy, as well as the consequent deployment of infrastructure for their operation," he points out.
On the morning of August 15, López Obrador recommended that whoever succeeds him in the Presidency "should start thinking about building a new refinery." In his administration, the man from Tabasco built the Olmeca Dos Bocas Refinery, bought the Deer Park refinery, and rehabilitates six refineries, so that Mexico is self-sufficient in fuels.
However, in the ENME, the federal government also aligns the exploitation of lithium and the Sonora Plan as "strategic national policies", betting that they will be key to reducing the emission of polluting gases and for Mexico to achieve international commitments in environmental matters. like those of the Paris Agreement.
Also, with the commitments made in terms of electric mobility in the Driving Change Together Declaration signed at COP24 in Katowice, the Declaration for the promotion of electric vehicles at COP 26 and 27, as part of the Glasgow Pact.
The ENME was developed by the Ministry of the Environment , in compliance with the Special Climate Change Program 2021-2024; It is also the result of joint work by more than 250 actors from the Federal, State and Municipal Public Administration.
In the chapter Alignment with strategic national policies, it adds four points: the role that the new Lithium state company will play for Mexico, the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, the General Law on Mobility and Road Safety , and a diagnosis and recommendations for the automotive industry.
