Mexico is Not Ready for Electric Mobility and This is The Reason

Mexico is not prepared to meet the growing demand for electricity from the automotive sector, a situation that could affect the development of the electric car market.

For Odón de Buen, former director general of the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (Conuee), said that in order to satisfy the demand for the cars that are already circulating in the country, 1.2 times what is currently generated for all services is required. in Mexico.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) at the end of March the sale of last generation units achieved a growth of 317% since it managed to place 1,051 units.

In the case of plug-in hybrid cars, which also have internal combustion and batteries that can be recharged directly from an electrical connection , 489 units were placed, representing an increase of 22.86%.

Although these are still marginal numbers compared to the commercialization of internal combustion cars, experts assure us that this market will grow rapidly in the following years. De Buen assured that until now the federal government has not managed to form a vision that allows promoting electromobility , there is even "a denial".

It gives me the impression, and the concern, that the electric vehicle market is going to grow very fast, and the electrical network is not going to be able to, it will not be growing at the same time, and we are going to have problems. There is no public policy to face this great challenge that electric mobility represents in Mexico”.

Daniel López, commercial director of Evergo Emobility, assured that electric mobility is not a fad, but a trend that is here to stay, since until now there is not a single automaker in the world that has not announced its plans to stop producing electric vehicles. internal combustion and focus on electrification. That is why an accelerated increase in the production and sale of electric cars is expected , mainly driven by China, Europe and even the United States, however, this is a trend that is already beginning to be replicated in Mexico.

In the last two years, Mexico has grown abysmally in the number of options that we have available to the market, before we had few vehicles, less than 20 100% electrified models, and at premium prices. Today we have more than 200 100% electric vehicles, although they are still not accessible for all budgets, they are for all categories”.

Given this evolution, Guillermo García Alcocer, former president of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), said that it is a mistake to think that networks are static, so they must become intelligent and incorporate aspects that address this new decentralization.
