EV = Electric Vehicle. V2H = Vehicle-to-Home, so EV can power your house
Driving through the mountains on our trip. We got to see fuel tanks and generators on many of these mountain’s homes. {Makes sense in colder, more remote areas}
Made me think about the future of V2H...
An average whole house generator is about $9k + $6k installed with transfer switch (source in comments) = $15k. It also needs a fuel source ($100-$200/day to operate), service contract for maintain the fuel, and regular maintenance > to make sure it turns on when the power goes out.
V2H hardware, today, between $7,500 and $15,000 installed.
It also requires an EV compatible with V2H. This is still too expensive.
In addition to Ford and GM, I'm aware of a number of startups trying to bring the top end costs, installed, below $10k. This will make V2H a stronger value prop for many Americans, open the backup power market up to many new installers and customers, and deliver a better, more reliable experience for users.
