Electricity Use Expected to Soar

Electricity Use Expected to Soar

It’s not just electric vehicles, and it’s not just Texas. A range of industries in various corners of the country are expected to put the nation’s power grid under immense strain in coming years, The Wall Street Journal reports.

To sustain ChatGPT, cloud and bitcoin, for example, some of the world’s biggest corporations have invested heavily in wind and solar power, and are now hurriedly experimenting with geothermal, nuclear and flared gas technologies.

It still may not be enough. “You’ve got to have every megawatt of power that can be produced,” says one municipal utility head.

  • Electricity sales in Texas grew at five times the national rate in the past decade, in what may be “a sign of what is to come for much of the U.S.,” per the Journal.
  • Artificial intelligence requires so much computing power that it could account for 3.5% of global electricity use by 2030.
  • The rise of data centers in Virginia has led the state’s largest utility to expect an 85% spike in electricity demand in the next 15 years.
