Doug Winston – Gives Back to the Industry

For years, educators have insisted that the skilled trades were dead-end jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Today, this is still one of the worst misconceptions used to argue against a career in the skilled trades.

I never intended to be an electrician. I intended to be an electrical contractor. The idea of owning my own business with no limit to potential earnings and growth appealed to me. While I never envisioned being anything more than a small contractor with more than 5-6 employees, the opportunities that presented themselves once I mastered my trade made for a logical progression.

Today, my work with Bring Back the Trades, Inc is my way of giving back to the industries I work within. I would also be remiss if I didn't discuss the many, many other skilled trades that are have excellent opportunities. The automotive field is one that comes to mind as regardless of power source, cars aren't going away any time soon. There are also many others that are often overlooked. I know people whose kids have opened their own businesses at a young age. Bake shops, hair salons and window tinting are just a few. I even have a friend in his 30's who makes a very respectable living doing something he loves, shoeing horses.

The bottom line is that the skilled trades provide an excellent pathway toward entrepreneurship. Bring Back the Trades, Inc will continue mentoring your young men and women as a starting point in all skilled trades through career fair type exhibits and scholarships to those wanting to attend trade school.
