The biggest misconception that has hurt the skilled trades is the perception that it's a place for "dumb" kids. This is due to the stigma that educators have placed on the trades for the last 40 years. The fact of the matter is that most students who don't engage academically are neither dumb nor lazy, but rather bored. I've said it a million times and I'll say it again. You CANNOT teach someone something they have no interest in.
The fact of the matter is, there is a place for everyone in the skilled trades (provided that is where your interests lie). Many people ask me "How does my son/daughter get started in the trades"?
Apprenticeships offer the best opportunity. Applicants that are accepted will be part of a state registered program with a prescribed curriculum, wage rates and a timeline to become a full journeyperson at no cost to the apprentice.
It should be noted that these are competitive spots and will be for the best and brightest but pre-apprenticeship programs are becoming more prevalent and assist in helping students in underserved communities secure a spot in an apprenticeship program after graduation while helping them to improve core competencies like math and reading comprehension.
For those who don't get into an apprenticeship (or one is not available), trade school is a great option. This will give an edge to those seeking an advantage when applying for an entry level position. Bring Back the Trades, Inc offers scholarships for those interested in trade school. Lastly, OTJ (On-The-Job Training) is probably the most common way people enter the trades (yes, that's how I did it). Bring Back the Trades, Inc offers "Skilled Trade Exhibits" which are basically career fairs where local employers not only show what their discipline entails, in a hands-on manner, but also offers recent graduates the chance to score an entry level job. Look for more of these across the US soon.
Once you master your trade, the options for advancement are unlimited. Some will become supervision; some will graduate to estimating and project management positions. Others will take the entrepreneurial route and open their own businesses. The sky is the limit once you find your passion!
