A CHARGE POINT IS NOT “A FANCY ELECTRIC OUTLET SOCKET”

A CHARGE POINT IS NOT “A FANCY ELECTRIC OUTLET SOCKET”

This is like no other kind of load that you will regularly pull on your household electrical system. A critical piece of equipment that can be a very dangerous piece of equipment when not installed correctly.

If you have an electrical firm that is dedicated to installing charge points and their quote is more expensive than the general electrician who also quoted it, ask - “why?” it is likely because they are installing designed-for-purpose equipment correctly and to specific requirements and regulation.

America is setting the standards globally for charge point installations therefore there is more to just physically installing the charge point, there are certain requirements and regulations that HAVE to be followed. You may not actively see this work but you should be made aware.

Biggest awareness is around - respect. Respect the load that these things pull, installed wrong and they can have very serious consequences. Respect the fact this is a fledgling industry and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Respect the suggestions of the professional charge point installer and do your own homework to confirm what they suggest.

Do your research on the hardware quoted, the installer, what the DNO means, what are the Smart Charging Regs and what paperwork you require post installation, warranty periods, the app which accompanies the charge point (ease of use, scheduling, iPhone/android, etc), if you can - understand what a KW is and then compare other household electrical items based on KW and average time turned on.
